What is Drivewise?
Allstate created Drivewise to help drivers who exhibit certain safe driving behaviours to save money on insurance, to help save lives and reduce losses on our roads.

Through the use of a telematics device, the Drivewise program promotes safe driving awareness. It’s designed to reward safe driving behaviour by recording when and how many kilometers are driven as well as how safely the vehicle is operated.

Who can enroll in Drivewise?
You are eligible to enroll in the Drivewise program if you are insured with Allstate and own a 1998 or later model vehicle.

Is there a cost to sign up for Drivewise?
The entire Drivewise program, including the device is completely free! Once you enroll in the program, you will receive a enrolment discount**.

How do I enroll in Drivewise?
You can enroll in the Drivewise program with an Allstate agent, or by calling 1-844-679-2650.

What if I’m not sure that the Drivewise program is for me?
You can download our free Test Drivewise app from iTunes (iOS version) or Google Play (Android version) to your smartphone and self-monitor your next 5 trips in your vehicle.  This will give you details about your driving record and projected discount range. Customers who download the Test Drivewise app are then eligible for an additional 5%** enrolment discount when they enroll in the Drivewise program.

What happens after I enroll?
Once you register for Drivewise, you will receive a Welcome e-mail along with a link to confirm your participation in the program and sign the Drivewise Customer Agreement Endorsement. You will need to read and accept (sign) the Customer Agreement within 30 days of receiving the Welcome e-mail or you will be automatically un-enrolled from the program. After the Customer Agreement is complete, the device will be shipped out and the enrolment discount will be applied.

In order to retain your enrolment discount, we recommend that you install your device immediately. You will have 30 days to install your device after you receive it from us. If the device is not installed within 14 days, we will send you an e-mail reminder. After 30 days, you will be un-enrolled from the program.

You will not be able to re-enroll in the program until your next renewal period. At which time, you will be required to go through the registration process again.

Can I cancel my enrolment at any time?
You can cancel your participation in the Drivewise program at any time. Simply call 1-844-679-2650.

What happens when my enrolment is cancelled?
We will issue you a letter to confirm you are no longer enrolled in the program; which updates your policy information and removes the enrolment or Drivewise discount. A revised policy will be provided, to confirm any change in premium. You can then choose to recycle the Drivewise device yourself, or drop it off at the nearest Allstate agency.

Are there any additional Drivewise program requirements?

  • Yes. There are a few additional programs requirements:
  • You must read and accept (sign) the Customer Agreement.
  • Vehicle must maintain road coverage (liability) on the enrolled vehicle(s) at all times.
  • The device must be installed within 30 days of receipt.
  • The device must be installed in a drive-able vehicle with a working battery connection.

Can I have Drivewise with my 6 month policy?
No. Drivewise is not available for policies with a 6 month term.

How does the Drivewise device work?
The device was developed specifically by Allstate and its vendor for the Drivewise program. It contains state-of-the-art technology and has the capability to transmit your driving data to Allstate or its authorized vendor via a wireless connection.

Is the device compatible with all vehicles?
The Drivewise device is compatible with MOST vehicles. Electronic, diesel and hybrid vehicles are not compatible with our device. Other specific vehicle incompatibilities may include, or result due to:

  • Vehicles made before 1998
  • Vehicle ergonomics
  • Inability to collect data from vehicle

Where is the device installed in the vehicle?
The device is easily plugged into the OBDII port (see below) of most cars with a model year of 1998 or later. Some vehicles are incompatible with the device and may present aesthetic or ergonomic issues for the driver. For such cases, you will determine if these issues prohibit you from using the device.

Who is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the device?
You are responsible for the installation and maintenance of the Drivewise device until completion of the monitoring. At that time you may you choose to responsibly recycle the device yourself, or drop it off at the nearest Allstate agency.

Can I unplug the device from my vehicle?
Unless you are experiencing a technical problem with your vehicle or plan to put your vehicle in storage, the device must be plugged into the OBDII port as long as you’re enrolled in the Drivewise program. Prior to service or emission testing, the device can be removed without penalty. Continuous or frequent removal/and or disconnection of the device may jeopardize ongoing participation in the program; resulting in the loss of any applicable discount.

Can I keep the device?
Allstate does own the devices, however at the conclusion of the monitoring period we do not require them back. Therefore you may keep the device, recycle the device yourself, or drop it off at the nearest Allstate agency.  In all cases, it is important to dispose of the device in a responsible way.

How do I know the device is working properly?
Our service provider, Modus Solutions LLC has a vigorous quality assurance process and each device is thoroughly tested prior to distribution. They will also verify the device is reporting trips once installed in your vehicle(s). For your own reassurance, login to your driver portal
https://drivewise.allstate.ca to view the reported trips and projected score.

Will the device drain my car battery?
An active device will have little effect on battery power for your vehicle. The voltage used is comparable to that of your car’s clock radio; due to the sleep mode on the device.

What happens if the device is lost, damaged in a car accident or stolen?
If the device is lost, damaged in a car accident or is stolen please contact your local Allstate agency or Drivewise team at 1-844-679-2650 for a replacement; provided you are still within the monitoring period.

When will I start saving?
You’ll receive an enrolment discount** upon joining the program. At renewal, you have the opportunity to earn an ‘Experience Discount’ and save up to 30%* off your annual auto insurance premium. The discount is based on your driving performance during the six month program period.

Can my insurance premium go up as a result of the Drivewise program?
No. The Drivewise program will not increase your premium. The purpose of the program is to give you the opportunity for additional savings on your renewal. At renewal, your overall premium may increase due to other factors (i.e. an at-fault accident during the year) or based on our general insurance rules (i.e. change in vehicle, driver, etc.) and guidelines.

What factors influence my potential discount?
The data generated by the device will be used to calculate the above referenced ‘Experience Discount’ for enrolled vehicle(s). Factors which may influence your potential savings at renewal are: daily driving data (speed, kilometers, and time of day your vehicle is driven), driving events (hard and extreme braking) and connection/disconnection of the Drivewise device. One particular event (i.e. hard braking to avoid hitting an animal) is unlikely to have a significant effect on your potential discount amount. However, a pattern of frequent hard braking could affect your discount amount.

How can I track my savings?
The Drivewise website will provide detailed information for all enrolled vehicles. It will display your estimated discount status and performance with a report card style evaluation for each factor; individualized trip details, date of trip, driving events, distance driven, maximum speed.

What can influence my Drivewise discount level at renewal?
Here are a few ways for you to increase your potential savings:

  • Ensure your Drivewise device is installed, at all times
  • Try to avoid driving at a high rate of speed
  • Maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you to avoid hard braking
  • Try to avoid driving during designated peak periods

What happens if I have to remove the device for storage or vehicle repair?
Prior to service or emission testing, the device can be removed without penalty. The Drivewise device starts working upon installation and updates will come through with every trip. The vehicle does need to be driven for data to upload to the servers.  If the device updates do not come through, you will not earn a Drivewise discount. Continuous or frequent removal and/or disconnection of the device may jeopardize ongoing participation in the program; resulting in the loss of any applicable discount. The vehicle must be driven regularly during the monitoring period. Vehicles that are put into storage during monitoring would not qualify for the program.

Is the data collected continuously updated?
New data is sent from the device when the vehicle is in operation. The Drivewise device starts working upon installation and updates will come through with every trip. The vehicle does need to be driven for data to be uploaded to the servers. Therefore, you will not earn a Drivewise discount if the device updates do not come through.

What happens if someone else drives my vehicle?
The Drivewise program is specifically linked to your vehicle. As a result, the driving habits of anyone who uses your vehicle will be used to calculate your savings at renewal.

What happens to the data that is collected?
At Allstate Insurance, respecting and protecting your privacy is of utmost importance. Your personal information, including information collected through the Drivewise program, is completely confidential.  Data collected via this program is not stored indefinitely and will never be used for any other purpose. To review all of our privacy standards and promises, please review our privacy policy.

Will the data be used in Allstate claim handling?
No. Data collected by the Drivewise device will not be used to settle an Allstate claim. By law, Allstate is required to release any device-generated information to law enforcement or related matters before the courts.

Who is the Drivewise service provider?
The service provider for the Drivewise program is Modus Solutions LLC. Modus was founded in 1999 and specializes in vehicle telematics and driver safety. The company presently manages multiple, nationwide insurance telematics programs.

Is data shared with the program vendor?
Yes. Modus Solutions LLC will manage customer driving data on behalf of Allstate. As a partnered service provider, Modus Solutions LLC is bound to the same standards of both Canadian privacy law and Allstate data and personal information security. The only information shared and collected with Modus is that which is required to administer this program; both delivery of the device and data management.  To review all of our privacy standards and promises, please review our privacy policy.

Can I switch the device between vehicles?
No. Doing so could compromise accurate collection of data and impact administration of a future “Experience Discount” for each vehicle. For any changes to existing vehicles or to enroll additional vehicles, simply contact your local Allstate agency or Drivewise team at 1-844-679-2650.

What if I replace my current vehicle with a new one or wish to enroll additional vehicles? Can I move the device to my new vehicle?
Yes. If it’s a replacement vehicle, you can install your device in your new vehicle.  Simply contact your local Allstate agency or Drivewise team at 1-844-679-2650. Once the new vehicle is enrolled in the program you will have 30 days to move the device to your new vehicle.

To enroll additional vehicles, please contact your local Allstate agency or Drivewise team at 1-844-679-2650 and any member of our team will be happy to walk you through the enrollment process.

What if I sell my vehicle and I’m not replacing it?
If a vehicle enrolled in the program is sold and not replaced, the Drivewise device is no longer needed and should be removed before any transfer sale. At which time, you can choose to responsibly recycle the device, or drop it off at the nearest agency.

Is there any reason Allstate would extend the monitoring period of the Drivewise?
The following changes may extend the monitoring period:

  • Addition or deletion of an underage occasional driver
  • Change in principal driver
  • Change in address
  • Installation of a new device
  • Discretionary reasons.

Who can I contact for assistance?
