Choosing the right auto insurance coverage can be overwhelming. There’s so much to think about and some factors depend on the province you live in (each requires a certain level of mandatory coverage). That’s why knowing that you have local Allstate agents standing by ready to help tailor a policy just for you can be the reassurance you need.
What's included in mandatory car insurance coverage?
Protects you if you are in an accident and you’re held legally liable for the injury to or death of other people. It also covers damage to their vehicle or property.
- Accident Benefits
Provides compensation for medical expenses, rehabilitation, funeral expenses, and loss of income due to disability (not applicable in Quebec) and more.
- Direct Compensation Property Damage
Covers you for damage to your vehicle and to property it is carrying when another motorist insured in your province is responsible for the damage (Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia).
What are some optional car insurance coverages I should consider?
- Collision or Upset
Covers the cost of repair or the replacement of your vehicle (up to its actual value less your deductible) if you have a collision with another car or an object (e.g. tree or guiderail).
Covers physical damage to your car (not resulting from a collision) caused some of the following:
theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects, lightning, explosion, windshield damage, or impact with an animal.
- Specified Perils
This is more limited than Comprehensive coverage. It covers physical damage to your car caused by a specific list of perils including fire and lightning, theft or attempted theft, windstorm, earthquake or hail, explosion, riot or civil commotion, and falling or forced landing of aircrafts or parts of an aircraft.
- All Perils
Provides you with the most complete coverage by combining Collision and Comprehensive coverages.
- Loss of Use
Reimburses you for the cost of alternative transportation (e.g. rental car, taxi) if your vehicle is being repaired as a result of damage or theft.
- Damage to a Non-Owned Vehicle
Covers you if you damage a car you don’t own such as a rental vehicle.
- Waiver of Depreciation
Add this coverage when you buy a brand new car to ensure you get the full value of your new vehicle (less than 36-months-old), if it’s written off as part of a covered claim.
- Claim Forgiveness
Only at Allstate – we’ll make sure your rates do not rise in the event of an at fault claim. A second claim will be forgiven upon the first claim expiring.*
- Disappearing deductible
Annually, your deductible will decrease for every term you go without a claim. Your deductible decreases every consecutive term you go without a claim until it disappears.**
- Ticket Forgiveness
In the instance that you get a ticket for a minor driving offense, your rates won’t increase.***
