When it comes to protecting your home, it helps to know that not all water damage is covered the same way. Overland flood coverage, an optional endorsement, helps protect your home against water entering your home from ground level due to heavy rainfall, rapid snow melt, or the overflow of a river or lake.
Home insurance may cover certain types of water damage, but protection depends on the cause of the loss and the coverage selected. Both Enhanced Water Damage and Limited Sewer Backup include protection for eligible sewer backups and sump pump malfunctions. Enhanced Water Damage provides broader protection for eligible events involving rapid rainfall, surface water, freshwater flooding, and service line failure. Use the table below to compare the two options.

No two homes are the same, and neither are their insurance quotes. Tell us about your Ontario home to explore coverage and pricing tailored to your needs.
Your home’s location may affect its exposure to theft, water damage, fire, flooding, wildfire as well as its access to fire stations and emergency services. This may affect your premium.
Insurers may consider the age and condition of your roof, plumbing, electrical system, foundation, construction materials and overall maintenance which may increase risk and coverage needs.
Renovations such as additions, finished basements, kitchens and bathrooms can increase rebuilding costs. Tell your insurer about significant improvements to help keep coverage up to date.
Updating an aging roof, plumbing or electrical system may reduce certain risks and could affect insurance costs. Homeowners may also want to consider water damage, sewer backup, and adequate liability coverage.

Home insurance is based on the cost to rebuild your home, not what it could sell for on the real estate market. If your home is damaged or destroyed by a covered loss, the goal of insurance is to help repair or rebuild the structure, not to reimburse you for the market price of the property. Market value includes factors such as land value, location, and housing demand, while insurance focuses on construction materials, labour, and rebuilding costs. Keep in mind that major renovations, additions, finished basements, or high-end finishes can increase rebuilding costs.
